Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does the Board do?

The work of the Board involves building a long-term strategy for the organization and developing and leading initiatives, projects, or programs based on agreed priorities for the year.  In addition, the board performs administrative functions that are required to maintain operations of the Association, such as budgeting and financial reporting.

How long are Board terms?

Two years. Board members may opt to serve up to two consecutive terms. If an at-large member becomes an officer, his or her term will be extended two additional years.

How many Board Members constitute a full Board complement?

Twelve Board members, including the executive committee, constitutes a full Board complement.

A full list of the positions are available here (this list includes both available positions and roles already filled for the 2015 calendar year): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZSRzd3N1x2RINx3QAvjcS-lUJpS0uarbSuKnsz-T_wI/edit?usp=sharing

How many Board Memberships are available this year?

Of the 12 positions on the board, 5 current Board members will continue to fulfill their terms.  This leaves 7 Board vacancies to be filled for the January 2015 – December 2017 term.

How often does the board meet?

Once a month on average plus an in-person board retreat; currently all of our monthly meetings have been virtual.  We believe the Board can best function if it can meet face-to-face at least 1-2 times a year.  In past years those meetings have been held on a Saturday and Sunday from 9am – 5pm in Washington DC.  Board committees may meet on a schedule defined by the committee.

In addition, our by-laws require us to hold an Annual Meeting.  This has historically been held on Monday and on site at the annual ODN conference.

What is the average monthly time commitment?

Board teleconference calls are usually 1 – 1.5 hours long. All board members are expected to participate in meetings and lead a task/process/committee. As such, one can expect to spend a minimum of 5 hours each month on Board activity.  The Executive Committee might contribute 10 hours per month or more.

Is there an expectation that I contribute financially if I join the Board?

Board members are responsible to ensure the fiscal viability of the association.  This means that we plan the annual budget to meet realistic income and expense expectations.  Sometimes the reality is that when we do not have the funds to fully sponsor board member travel and food, board members have stepped up and offered in-kind donations.  In addition, during fundraising drives, it is expected that all board members make a contribution to lead by example.

Earlier, we noted that there are 4 current board members continuing their terms, leaving 8 openings.  This was a mathematics error.  There are 5 current board members continuing their terms, leaving 7 open positions.  Perhaps we need to re-take the ARM course again (formerly MOPS)!
